How to Get a Class 2B Licence in Singapore: 10 Steps
Every step to a Class 2B motorcycle licence in Singapore in the order you will do them: enrolment, BTT, PDL, circuit, RTT, road lessons and the TP test.
A Class 2B licence lets you ride a motorcycle up to 200 cc (or an electric motorcycle up to 15 kW) in Singapore. You must be 18 or older. The process is the same at all three driving centres, with small differences in how lessons are named and booked.
Here is the full journey in the order you will meet it.
1. Choose a driving centre and enrol
Class 2B is taught at three centres: Bukit Batok Driving Centre (BBDC), ComfortDelGro Driving Centre (CDC) in Ubi and Singapore Safety Driving Centre (SSDC) in Woodlands. Pick the one you can reach most easily, because you will travel there many times. Our guide to choosing a driving centre compares them.
To enrol you need your NRIC (or passport and FIN card if you are a foreigner). At the counter you take an eyesight and colour-blindness test and have your photo taken. Your course is usually valid for one year.
2. Attend the theory lessons
Each centre runs classroom or online theory lessons that you must complete before booking the Traffic Police theory tests. SSDC, for example, has seven compulsory lessons: four on riding theory and three on defensive riding. CDC runs its theory lessons over Zoom.
3. Pass the internal evaluation, then the Basic Theory Test (BTT)
Before you can book the BTT you must pass the centre’s own practice test (called the Theory Trial Test or Internal Evaluation). The BTT itself has 50 multiple-choice questions and you need 45 correct. If you already hold a Class 3 or 3A licence, you skip the BTT. See how to pass the BTT and RTT.
4. Apply for your Provisional Driving Licence (PDL)
Once you pass the BTT, apply for your PDL online through the Singapore Police Force e-services. You need a valid PDL for the on-road lessons and for the practical test, so check its expiry date when you plan your bookings.
5. Start circuit lessons
Your first practical lessons take place on the centre’s closed circuit. You learn moving off, gear changes, braking and slow control, then the test courses: slope, narrow plank, pylon slalom, crank course, figure 8 and emergency braking. Each lesson is 100 minutes and you only move on when your instructor passes you on that stage.
Expect to repeat some stages. SSDC says its learners average about 15 circuit sessions, well above the minimum. The circuit skills guides explain each course.
6. Complete the three simulator modules
All learners must complete three simulator modules of about 20 minutes each before booking the practical test. The simulator covers situations that are too risky to practise on real roads. Booking opens after an early practical lesson (lesson 3 at SSDC, lesson 5 at CDC).
7. Pass the Riding Theory Test (RTT)
The RTT is the motorcycle-specific theory test, again 50 questions with a pass mark of 45. You must finish the defensive riding theory lessons first. A pass is valid for one year, so do not take it too early if your lessons are likely to stretch out.
8. Ride lessons 6 to 8 on the road
With your PDL and theory done, you ride on public roads around the centre with an instructor. Lessons 6 and 7 are usually in small groups; lesson 8 is a one-to-one session that works like a mock test. If you are not at test standard, your instructor will ask you to book revision lessons.
9. Take the Traffic Police practical test
The test starts with a circuit section and then moves onto a road route. The examiner stops the test if you reach 20 demerit points or commit an immediate-failure fault. Book as soon as you are eligible, because slots are often several weeks out. Our test day guide covers what to bring and how scoring works.
10. Do the expressway ride and collect your licence
After passing, you complete an Expressway Familiarisation Ride with an instructor, then apply for your Class 2B Qualified Driving Licence (S$50). Your first 12 months are a probation period with stricter demerit limits and a probation plate on your bike. Read what changes after you pass.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get a Class 2B licence in Singapore?
Most learners take three to six months from enrolment to passing the Traffic Police test. Lesson availability and the wait for a test slot, often several weeks, matter more than how fast you learn.
What is the minimum age for a Class 2B licence?
You must be at least 18 years old to enrol for Class 2B at a driving centre.
Do I need a car licence before I take Class 2B?
No. But if you already hold a Class 3 or 3A licence you are exempt from the Basic Theory Test, which saves you a test and some lessons.
Can I learn Class 2B with a private instructor?
Class 2B is taught through the three driving centres: BBDC, CDC and SSDC. You enrol with one of them and do your lessons, simulator and test there.
